Stranraer Drink Driving Ferry

Reduced Sentence
Stranraer Sheriff Court and Justice of the Peace Court

Our client had a few too many libations on the Larne ferry and took a risk driving off the ferry.

The police had been tipped the wink by ferry staff and were lying in wait 50 yards along the exit lane. He was stopped and breathalysed and found to be 4 times the drink-driving limit.

We were instructed in the case to enter an early plea of guilty. In these most unusual times we were compelled to do so in writing and in the absence of our client. Written mitigation is a different beast from addressing the Court in person.

Our Mr Simpson lodged the procedural forms and drafted mitigation. The Presiding Sheriff imposed a period of disqualification of 20 months with a fine of £640. The period of disqualification reduces to 15 months upon successful completion of the Drink Drive Rehabilitation Scheme. 15 months for a reading that is 4 times the limit can properly be viewed as a most satisfactory outcome.

This matter was dealt with at Stranraer Sheriff Court on 5th August 2020.
